Jerry Goldsmith's 'urban story' scores are always fun scores. What are his 'urban story' scores? How about Explorers, Dennis the Menace and the oh so rare score to The 'Burbs. Okay so you get the picture. The score to Small Soldiers is no exception. It is a score full of fun themes. One of the funniest would have to be Roll Call. It isn't funny in that it's humorous, but funny in that it is supposed to be in the same league as his march for Patton but one must always remember that the march is being played for toy soldiers that have come to life. Rather than a trumpet in the background as in Patton, Goldsmith uses an electric guitar. An updating of his technique in Patton to be sure but effective.

The opening track, Assembly Line is an excellent track by Goldsmith as is Prepare for Assault. Another theme that Goldsmith uses frequently in this score is the old Civil War march, "When Johnny Comes Marching Home". This theme is played whenever the evil Commando Elite are shown onscreen. Backed by the electric guitar, it is a combination of seriousness and humor that only Goldsmith manages to pull off so frequently and sucessfully. While not as great as Explorers or The 'Burbs this score a good effort by a consistant composer.
