A newcomer to the American scene, Stargate provided David Arnold with the opportunity to write the soundtrack to his second full length feature. Writing stirring science fiction music of the likes of John Williams, Arnold produces an incredible orchestral score. Full symphony and choral sound is mixed with a full array of strange instruments to produce a stunning and surprising soundtrack. His mix of both action tracks and slightly Egyptian style themes is what makes this soundtrack so good. When I saw the movie for the first time, I immeadiately loved the opening theme. Starting slowly and then building into a tremendous overture, the theme is one of the best written on the soundtrack. Often times in soundtracks, wherever a choir is used, its usually for brief spurts as with Hans Zimmer. However, like James Horner's use of the choir in Glory, Arnold also uses his choir throughout the score and for long durations. Essentially using it as yet another instrument. Watch for this young composer to make headlines someday --the potential is definately there. Thirty tracks make for quite a bit of good music, too... A great buy for all.
