Thomas began his musical career at age 11, playing the trombone. In his early teens he grew more interested in rock music, and played bass guitar in a local garage band, "Hindsight" for many years until it fell apart. Wanting to pursue his musical career, he studied at the Musicians Institute while playing with various bands for a year before deciding to go back home. At 19, he joined VAST and toured with the band in 1999.
