Basic Sugar Cookies
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 egg
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
Sugar for sprinkling

Directions

In large bowl, beat sugar and butter until fluffy.  Beat in egg and vanilla.  Combine flour, baking powder and salt; stir into sugar mixture.  Form dough into flat disk on lightly floured surface; wrap in plastic wrap and chill for 1 hour.  Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.  On lightly floured covered board, roll out half of dought to 1/8-inch thick. Using cookie cutters, cut out various shapes.  Place 1 inch apart on cookie sheet.  Sprinkle with granulated sugar.  Bake 10 to 12 minutes until lightly browned.  Cool on rack. 
Makes 3 dozen cookies.
