Snapshot of icy ties between India and Pakistan

NEW DELHI, July 13 (Reuters) - Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf will meet over the weekend for talks on resolving the bloody Kashmir territorial dispute.

The summit between the nuclear-armed neighbours, to be held in the northern Indian city of Agra -- home to the famed monument to love, the Taj Mahal -- is the first in over two years.

The two countries have fought two of their three wars over Kashmir and routinely exchanged fire across a 720-km (450-mile) ceasefire line dividing the territory until late last year.

Following is a chronology of India's rivalry with Pakistan:

Aug 1947 - Hindu ruler of Muslim-majority Jammu and Kashmir decides to join secular India rather than Islamic Pakistan when the subcontinent is partitioned upon freedom from colonial rule.

Oct 1947 - India and Pakistan go to war in Kashmir.

Jan 1948 - Ceasefire ordered by U.N. Security Council takes effect in Kashmir. U.N. resolution seeks a plebiscite in the state of Jammu and Kashmir to decide its future.

1959 - China occupies 38,000 sq km (14,670 sq miles) Aksai Chin portion of Kashmir's Ladakh region. India says China illegally occupies that area as well as 5,180 sq km (2,000 sq miles) of northern Kashmir that Pakistan later ceded to Beijing.

Sept 6-22, 1965 - India and Pakistan go to war over Kashmir. Fighting ends after United Nations calls for ceasefire.

Dec 3-17, 1971 - India-Pakistan war over East Pakistan (later Bangladesh), ends when 90,000 Pakistani troops surrender.

July 1972 - Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Pakistani counterpart Zulfikar Ali Bhutto sign accord in the hill station of Shimla that envisages bilateral settlement of disputes.

May 1974 - India detonates first nuclear device but says it is for atomic research and not weapons.

Jan 1990 - Indian army opens fire in Kashmir's summer capital Srinagar during protest against crackdown on separatism, killing 38 and spurring a revolt. More than 30,000 are reported killed in rebellion-related incidents over the next decade. India says Pakistan arms and trains guerrillas. Pakistan denies the charge.

Feb 1990 - India imposes federal rule in Kashmir.

May 1990 - Moulvi Mohammed Farooq, chief Muslim priest of the Kashmir valley, killed by unidentified gunmen. At least 50 people killed when troops fire on mourners.

June 1991 - Government evacuates foreign tourists from Kashmir following killing of kidnapped Israeli tourist.

Jan 1994 - Diplomats of both countries fail to narrow differences on Kashmir. Pakistan rules out more talks unless India stops alleged human rights violations in Kashmir.

March-May 1995 - Security forces surround Charar-e-Sharief town, site of holy shrine where insurgents are holed up. Fire guts Charar-e-Sharief shrine. Facing protests, government abandons plan to hold first state assembly elections since 1987.

July 1995 - Al-Faran guerrillas kidnap five Western tourists, one of whom, a Norwegian, is later found dead.

May 1996 - First polls in seven years, as part of India's general elections, in Jammu and Kashmir.

June 1996 - Indian and Pakistani diplomats meet in Islamabad and announce eight-point agenda for peace talks.

May 1998 - India holds nuclear tests in Rajasthan near the border with Pakistan. Pakistan retaliates with six tests.

Sept 1998 - Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and Pakistan's Nawaz Sharif meet in New York during U.N. General Assembly session and agree to resume peace talks in Islamabad, starting with diplomats discussing peace, security and Kashmir.

Feb 1999 - Vajpayee makes historic bus ride to Pakistan for summit with Sharif and signs bilateral Lahore peace declaration.

May 1999 - India and Pakistan stand on the brink of a fourth war when India launches military offensive against what it says are Pakistan-backed infiltrators near the icy heights around Kargil in Indian-held Kashmir. Pakistan denies it is providing military support to guerrillas.

Oct 1999 - Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is overthrown in a coup by Army General Pervez Musharraf on October 12, 1999, just a day before Vajpayee is sworn in for the third time.

March 2000 - Gunmen shoot dead 35 Sikhs in Kashmir. India blames two Pakistan-backed separatist groups for the massacre. Bill Clinton makes first visit to India by a U.S. president in 22 years as part of a South Asia tour. Despite the Musharraf coup, Clinton visits Pakistan, but for less than five hours.

Nov 2000 - Vajpayee announces unilateral ceasefire in Kashmir to coincide with Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Dec 2000 - Pakistan says it will observe maximum restraint at the Line of Control in Kashmir in response to a ceasefire offer.

Feb 2001 - India extends suspension of hostilities against militants by a further three months.

May 2001 - India calls off its six-month unilateral ceasefire and says it will invite Musharraf for talks. Pakistan responds positively.

June 2001 - Musharraf takes over as president of Pakistan replacing figurehead president, Mohammad Rafiq Tarar.

July 2001 - India and Pakistan differ over Musharraf meeting leaders of Kashmir's main alliance, the All Party Hurriyat (Freedom) Conference, during his visit to New Delhi for the July 14-16 summit.

India announces various pre-summit gestures including freeing Pakistani civilians in Indian prisons and easing visa procedures for Pakistanis wanting to travel to India.
