With their last single, "Issho ni..." MAX made their long awaited dream of "undancing MAX" come true. Their wishes, gushing forth one after the other without getting satisfied have born a new challenge. Like its title says, their new release is the fruit of their never stopping energy!
With their '99 single, "Issho ni...", Nana, Mina, Reina, and Lina showed us "Undancing MAX" for the first time.
MINA: I guess you could say, since "Issho ni..." was so good, the next idea(s) came to us
pretty quickly. We all said 'We definately want to dance for the next one!f But since we
wanted the kind of coolness where we're all dancing more comfortably, each in her own
way, to the rhythm, and it's cool, rather than the cool, uniformed dancing we've had
until now, we chose this song.
REINA: But it was really hard to chose a song. We all worried about it together, and then
decided 'We want to do this kind of song,' and went to the director to give
advice....
MINA: And he said 'How about doing it the way you want?'
LINA: It sort of felt like we did our best, and persuaded him to (say that), but...(laugh)
NANA: Because no matter what, we really really wanted to do what we wanted for our
first single of 2000.
What the four of them wanted to do the most.
That was pretty much hip-hop.
Their single new single, releaed on Feb. 16, "Never gonna stop it" is a geniunegroovy
tune, right down to the rap included in it.
LINA: When we go to clubs, we dance to this kind of song, a lot of the songs we listen to
our this kind of song: in our private lives, our music has this kind of feeling.
NANA: What started this idea was basically the solo dance corner we did at our last
concert tour. We all danced various styles of dance, so gradually we grasped that kind of
rhythm.
Actually, this song was written by the bassist of MAX's back band, Mr. Sasamoto.
MINA: While we were on tour, we talked with him a lot about our favorite music and
things like that, so he really understands what we want to do.
REINA: Even though we call him 'Father.' (laugh) Also, one of our (back) dancers wrote
the rap part. So it really feels as though this song was a family project.
And in the midst of it all, MAX wrote the lyrics themselves. This is also a new
experience for them.
REINA: We all wrote (lyrics) separately, and then took the good parts from each
member's, but....
MINA: It was very hard. I went to the book store every day and bought a dictionary or
something, so I became good friends with the bookseller. (laugh)
NANA: So did I. (laugh). I'd think 'I want to write this part in English, but I don't know
what it would be in English' and look it up in the dictionary, and write it and stuff.
REINA: And then, sometimes we'd get writer's block on a verse, and all us would brain
storm about what we should do, and rejecting ideas, and we kept doing things that way.
But it was pretty fun, I guess.
The lyrics that they came up with our a positive message song that will sent a yell of
'Do everything your own special way!' to people who are about to give up on their
dreams.
LINA: Right now, we're full of feeling to 'just do it!' We're feeling, 'For sure, we can do
more!'
REINA: We want to break our shell, and gradually do new things, and in a good way,
betray the image our listeners have of us.
Perhaps Mina, Reina, Nana and Lina sent that yell to themselves....
