MIDDLE AGES: SPAIN ......................................................................................................................................[Top of the page]

The origin of Perez derives from the medieval custom of taking the name of an ancestor as a family name to confirm belonging to this family. It is a patronymic name derived from Pero, Pedro, Petrus, Petros, etc. The suffix "ez" means "descendant of". Perez was already abundant in the middle ages.

It is also believed that Perez comes from the apostle Simon, whom Jesus called "Kefas" or rock in Aramaic; "Petros" in Greek, "Petrus" in Latin. "Pedro" in Spanish, etc, etc, to nominate him as the first pope, or "rock", foundation of the church.

Some say that Perez could derive from the name of the pear tree; peral.

DIFFUSION of PEREZ/PERES ........................... ........ .......... ...........

"The Rabbi Jacob Toledano, in his book "Sepher Ner ha-Maarav" relates the following tradition, according to which the Perez family, one of the most famous ones that came from Spain to Morocco during the expulsion of 1492, installed themselves, first in Dades, (a southern valley of Morocco), and then in Talouet, (south too), on the territories that the family had acquired. They sought to preserve their genealogy, which origins went back to biblical times. Having been prosperous and grown larger, this family branched out through Morocco". (A. Laredo)

Today the surname is widely extended throughout the world, mostly in Spain and Latin America. There are innumerable families with this surname, of very different backgrounds and ethnicity and without any relation or family ties among them. Because of the abundance of Perez, some added the name of the region where the family lived after the surname, so they could be distinguished from others.

The World Biographical Index , internet edition, contains 4,250 persons from around the world with this surname, that have contributed in some way to humanity.

There are some controversial opinions about Antonio Pérez. Supposedly he was involved in the murder of Escobeda, justifying it for state reasons. Apparently because of this, Philipe II lost his trust in Pérez and had him arrested. But Pérez escaped and spent the rest of his life in France, where he wrote his memories. MY DIRECT ANCESTORS in SPAIN & PUERTO RICO: Ten generations.

It is almost impossible to trace one's ancestry when dealing with the surname PÉREZ, because of obvious reasons.... unless you have clear information on your line of ancestry, it would be a monumental chore.........

As of June 2004 the initial information has changed, three new generations, from the XVII and XVIII centuries, have been discovered.  The oldest  ancestors known in my family are Juan Pérez and María Sánchez, born in Spain, probably in the town of Magacela, in the province of Badajoz, Extremadura.   With the marriage of one of their sons, who emigrated to Puerto Rico, the surname Pérez Manzo - later Manso or Peremanso-  appeared, and was used until the middle of the XIX century, when it evolved into only Pérez.

Regrettably the parochial archives of Magacela, Spain, were destroyed during the Spanish civil war, thus it is almost impossible to trace back the ancestors of the Perez Sanchez family.
