Jesus and the Apostles studied, memorized, used, quoted and read most often from the Bible of their day, the Septuagint. Since Matthew wrote primarily to convince the Jews that Jesus of Nazareth was indeed their promised Messiah, it follows as a matter of course that his Gospel is saturated with the Hebrew Scriptures. Yet when Jesus quotes the Old Testament in Matthew, He uses the Hebrew text only 10% of the time, but the Greek Septuagint translation -- 90% of  the time.

Amazingly, Jesus and Paul used the Septuagint as their primary Bible. It was just like the Bible each of us holds in our hands, not the original Hebrew.

They did not speak just one language, not just Hebrew, They spoke Aramaic, and Greek. Remember how Pilate, when Jesus was crucified, he had a sign placed over him, "King of the Jews." It's not just in Hebrew, it's in Greek and Aramaic as well, because that's what the culture was like. Then time progresses. Following the crucifixion,  Jesus is resurrected, and following that, he ascends into heaven.  And the disciples are using the Septuagint very effectively, to bring multitudes to Christ, including many Jews. So what happens? They become such a threat to the Saducees, so years after Jesus ascended into heaven, the Pharisees and Saducees are challenged by the growth of Christianity, so they decide to meet and come together, in the council of Jamnia, and this is held in 90 A.D.

And in this council they are discussing many things, and it is all about what are we going to do about the growth of Christianity? One scheme they come up with, is to demonize the Bible that the Christians are using. Because their holy scriptures matched up with the scriptures that the Christians are using. The Septuagint is basically the Greek version of their scriptures. So they just had to take out certain books, and sections, out of the Hebrew scriptures, and they came up with a new version, and so they were able to distinguish their holy book, from the holy scriptures that the Christians were using. Because they said, "oh, you have extra books, it's not the same as we have," and they also took out books, for example, the book of Wisdom, otherwise known as the Wisdom of Solomon, and the book of Wisdom, now regarded as an apocryphal book, it has a very strong Messianic message. At this point, you probably want to know why did they remove these books and these sections, from the Scriptures? Why was it such a threat, so dangerous?

Why did they see that these books could bring many to Christ? On top of that, they also made certain, central changes, to the Scripture. I will give you an example from Deuteronomy 32, 8. (partial transcription of talk by Sarah Fischer, complete talk given below, on 30 min. video).

The Happiness Of Heaven:

The Joys and Rewards of Eternal Glory, by F.J. Boudreaux

Shows how the joys of Heaven stem from the direct vision of God--the joys of the heart; of the mind; of physical beauty; of the senses; of friendship; and of perfect love of God. Tells of the magnificent variety in Heaven. How Mary Magdalen's glory exceeds that of many innocent souls; etc. Explains that a high degree of glory in Heaven is within the reach of all baptized souls; however poor; ignorant or insignificant they may be here. A marvelous book!
The Rev. Fr. J. Boudreau, S.J., was a priest of the Society of Jesus and author of the nineteenth century. His work The Happiness of Heaven: The Joys and Rewards of Eternal Glory was originally published in 1872 by John Murphy & Company, Maryland. It discusses the infinite joy of the souls in Heaven, as well as the fact that all baptized persons are capable of obtaining it, no matter how seemingly insignificant they may be. Father Boudreau's book was also reset and published by TAN in 1984 with the Imprimatur.
