(2)Conferment of Academic Qualifications and Academic Dress Statute 1992, rule 8.

(3)Honorary Degrees and Awards Statute 1998.

(4)The regulations of the University of Auckland provide that "the academic dress worn by members of the University at any public ceremony of the University shall be the costume appropriate to their degree, but doctors may on special occasions wear a scarlet gown" (the wording of the University of New Zealand from 1938). Nowhere in the regulations is "scarlet gown" defined, nor is "doctors" expressly limited to the higher doctors only. Clearly it encompasses all doctors on the teaching staff of the university, as well as graduates, as membership of the university is defined by the University of Auckland Act 1961 (s 3) as including the Council, professors emeriti, professors, lecturers, junior lecturers, etc.

Almost all masters and doctors’ robes in this country are of the Cambridge MA pattern. The pattern of scarlet gown anticipated by the University of New Zealand (and the newer Auckland) regulations for doctors is most probably a Cambridge MA robe, but it should properly be a Cambridge doctors’ full dress robe. Otherwise the advantage of the dispensation would be lost.

The university only permitted the PhD a masters’ gown unadorned until 1972, but other doctors had masters’ gowns of black silk, or scarlet silk or cloth (from 1948). Those who had already chosen scarlet gowns would have nothing to gain from the privilege, unless the special gown was of a different pattern. Indeed, the PhD alone would benefit.

Today the senior University of Auckland doctors (LLD, DEng, LittD and DSc), like those of the former University of New Zealand, are required to wear Cambridge MA pattern robes of black silk, scarlet silk or scarlet cloth. Honorary doctors wear scarlet Cambridge MA pattern robes. For other cases, if an individual chooses scarlet cloth (as is common), there would be no need for the doctor to avail him or herself of the special dispensation on any occasion, unless the special robe was of the Cambridge doctors’ full dress pattern. No New Zealand university actually prescribes a doctors’ gown other than in the undress (MA) pattern.

Nor is it clear whether coloured facings should be worn with the special scarlet robe. Since no facings are prescribed for the normal dress of the higher doctoral degrees, it would seem that these should be omitted from the special robe, in the absence of a direction to the contrary. But in that case the only way to distinguish between nine different doctoral degrees would be by the hood, if this should even be worn with the special scarlet robe.

If coloured silk facings were used for the lower doctoral degrees (EdD, DFA, DJur, DMus, and the PhD), then the PhD in special dress would be identical to the Cambridge LittD, in respect of both the robe and hood. To avoid this, the special scarlet robes of the four higher doctorates could be faced with the appropriate faculty colours (LLD light blue, DEng dark violet, LittD pink, and DSc dark blue)- something which is not done on the ordinary robe. The special scarlet robes of the five lower doctorates (including the PhD) would remain unfaced- and indistinguishable. If the conflict with the Cambridge LittD were not considered important, it would be possible to allow facings for all nine doctorates.

(6)The EdD, DFA, DJur and DMus normally wear, like the PhD, a black MA robe with coloured facings. A scarlet robe would be a distinct advantage for them.

(10)The PhD at present wears a black cloth robe with scarlet and gold facings. They would be the principal beneficiaries of this "special occasions" rule being properly applied. If the rule is applied as suggested they would have a scarlet cloth Cambridge doctors’ full dress robe with scarlet silk facings.

(12)Commerce however is burgundy (BCC 36 claret) rather than orange (BCC 57 spectrum orange).
