Catálogo Temático - José Mauricio Nunes Garcia
(Thematic Catalogue)

The book is the result of an intense research and analysis of the original scores, having a list of all José Mauricio´s known works. It is a pioneer book in Brazilian musical research. We have only to regret that it has no current editions.

The book presents "incipits", with the initial measures of all mentioned works.

1997
Biblioteca Nacional Mattos, Cleofe Person de
José Mauricio Nunes Garcia - Biografia
(Biography)

A comprehensive and detailed biography of JM. For this edition, all surviving original documents had been researched (baptism certification, "da genere" document). These documents record various events of the chapel´s master life, some of them obscure in the Catálogo Temático, (such as his parent´s marriage and the payment of his house´s mortgage).

The book depicts as well the society´s manners of that time, and the conflicts between brazilian and portuguese in Rio de Janeiro at the beginning of 19th century, a time that brazilian and portuguese national histories became coincident.

1862-4
Typographia J.M.N.G. Macedo, Joaquim Manuel de
Um Passeio pela Cidade do Rio de Janeiro (A Promenade by The City of Rio de Janeiro)

Originally printed in 1862, at the print office of Dr. José Mauricio Nunes Garcia Júnior, JM´s son, this works describes various events of his life, reported to the author by his son.

The author sold by the end of 19th century the copyright of this work to Editora Garnier, that recently published a new edition, (photo) in which there are color prints of drawings and oil paintings of that time.

Besides the stories about JM, it reports the history of various places of Rio de Janeiro. It was used chiefly in the page The city of Rio de Janeiro in the second Half of 18th century.

1941
Livraria ELO Lima, Rossini Tavares de
Vida e Época de José Maurício
(José Maurício's Life and Timeline)

As a biography it was already superseded by Cleofe Person de Mattos' book, but most of the described episodes are not contradictory in both. This reveals its historical precision.

1966
Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute Barreiros, Eduardo Canabrava
Evolução Urbana da Cidade do Rio de Janeiro
(Urban Evolution of the city of Rio de Janeiro)

The book is a sequence of detailed historical maps, that trace the development of the town, since its foundation in 1565 up to 1965.

With the help of this book we installed the interactive maps and found the present names of some streets, based in their historical names.

1834
Firmin Didot & Fréres Debret, Jean Baptiste
Viagem Pitoresca e Histórica ao Brasil
(A Pictorial and Historical Travel to Brazil)

Debret, a member of the 1816 French Mission to Brazil, published this work after his return to Paris, in 1834.

Debret was a fine painter, and he made the best pictorial report of brazilian history, of manners and life in Rio de Janeiro during the 15 years he lived in this town (1816-1831).

Many of the pictures that illustrate this page are from him.

We consulted a recent brazilian edition, published by Editora Itatiaia, in four volumes, in 1989.

1998
PubliFolha Various authors
Enciclopédia da Música Brasileira
(Encyclopaedia of Brazilian Music)

It is a comprehensive work. There we found some interesting facts about Marcos Portugal and Sigismund Neukomm.

It has a summarized biography of José Maurício, and a complete list of his works.

2003
Andrea Johansson Estudio Mariz, Vasco
A Música Clássica Brasileira
(Brazilian Classical Music)

This book has short biographies about all great brazilian classical composers to the present, and drawings and photographs related to José Maurício not published before.
