Acadian Pioneers René Landry dit l'aîné

& René Landry dit le jeune

According to the Landry Family Association, this surname is considered to be the second oldest in France. It has been speculated that the Landry family in Acadia originated from La Chaussée, France. Even though it is known that a majority of the first colonists in Acadia came from Loundunais in La Chaussée and there were numerous Landrys in the vicinity of LaChaussée in the 17th century, Professor Stephen White from the University of Moncton etirates there is still no certainty that the Landrys who arrived in Acadia were from that area.

The Landry in Acadia have two progenitors but these two ancestors do not seem to be related even though they were both named René.

René Landry dit L'aîné René Landry dit le jeune

Alexis Landry - Pioneer of Caraquet

Agathe Landry's family name is through the following direct descendancy of René Landry dit l'ainé.

Generation 1.

René Landry dit l'aîné was born in France around 1618. Although not related to the other, he would be the older of these two namesakes and in his fifties at the 1671 census. Like other Acadians, René was listed as a farmer on the 1671 census in Acadia. Around 1645, he married Perrine Bourg (widow of Simon Pelletret). Together, they had 5 children. We are descendant through their son Claude Landry.

Generation 2.

Claude Landry was born around 1663, the youngest son of pioneers René Landry & Perrine Bourg. He married Marguerite Thériot around 1683 and had ten children. In August 1695, his mark is found when he swore allegeance to the crown of England. On August 25, 1714, he received permission to establish on Île Royale (Cape Breton). He would not remain long as he is found back in Pisiguit in 1722. Claude Landry died in Port Royal on December 12, 1740. He was 79.

Generation 3.
Joseph Landry
continues our family lineage. He was the youngest son of Claude Landry and Marguerite Terriot. Joseph was born on June 19, 1713 in Port Royal. He married also in Port Royal on October 6, 1734 Jeanne Robichaud, daughter of Prudent & Henriette petitpas. This couple had ten children.

In 1755, Joseph Landry and his family were deported to Massachussets. They somehow made their way to Quebec where in 1762, their daughter Euphrosine was married. Joseph Landry died in Deschambault (near Quebec City) on February 14, 1768. He was 55. There is no mention of his wife.

Generation 4.
Claude Landry was born in 1748, the son of Joseph Landry and Jeanne Robichaud. This ancestor was five years old when his family was deported to Massachussets. He was still a child when his family made their way through difficult circumstances to Quebec City.

Claude Landry married Hélène Dugas, daughter of Charles & Anne Leblanc from Carleton on October 16, 1777 at the Church of Notre-Dame-de-Québec. According to Claude Landry and Hélène Dugas' marriage contract signed October 6, 1770 in Quebec City, Claude was a sailor for the service of Jean-Paul Bourdon who sailed between Carleton and Quebec City.

Seven years later on the census of 1777, Claude Landry and his family are found in Carleton on the Gaspé Coast of the Baie des Chaleurs. This family will have at least fourteen children. Claude passed away on September 23 1803 in Carleton. He was only 55. Claude Landry is one of the first pioneers in Carleton. In that town, a monument was erected in memory of the first Acadian residents and on the monument we find the name Landry in honour of our ancestor.

Generation 5.
Sébastien-Étienne Landry
was born in Carleton, on January 21, 1775, the son of Claude Landry and Hélène Dugas. He was also a sailor like his father. Sébastien-Étienne Landry married on January 8, 1799 in St-Joseph-de-Carleton, Lucille, daughter of Mathurin Bujold and Marie Bernard. From this first marriage, he will have six children, two of which died not long after birth. At 38, Sébastien Landry married a second time on October 31, 1813 Émérance Painchaud. Another ten children will be born of this second marriage. Sébastien-Étienne Landry died at the age of 96 on March 1, 1868.

Generation 6.

Romain Landry was born on November 2, 1803 in St-Joseph-de-Carleton, Quebec, the son of Sébastien-Étienne Landry and Lucille Bujold. He was 28 when he married Hermine Bélanger, daughter of Louis & Louise Gasse on January 2, 1832 in that same parish. At least, ten children of this couple will be born there and our lineage will continue with their son Napoléon Landry.

Generation 7.
Napoléon Landry
was born on October 27, 1835 in St-Joseph-de-Carleton, Quebec the son of Romain Landry and Hermine Bélanger. At 21, he married Louise Arseneau, daughter of Frédéric & Marguerite Zithée Bujold on January 29, 1856 also in St-Joseph-de-Carleton. A son named Jean will be born of this union. At 31, Napoléon Landry was a widower when he married a second time to Marie Lavoie on August 14, 1866.

Generation 8.
Jean Landry
was born around 1857-1860 probably in St-Joseph-de-Carleton, the son of Napoléon Landry and Marie-Louise Arseneau. Jean Landry is the paternal grandfather of Agatha Landry. She remembers him as a gentle man with a loud voice who believed that the earth was flat. He was a cook and groundskeeper for a Lodge at Lac Nigadoo, N.B. Jean Landry was married to Élizabeth Lavigne, daughter of Hilarion & Marie Blanchard on May 21, 1880 in Petit-Rocher, N.B. Seven children have been found so far in the registers.

We also are linked to the other René Landry dit le jeune, born around 1634 who by his marriage around 1659 with Marie Bernard, left a substantial progeny in the maritime provinces. Fifteen children were born of this union and we are descendants of four of their children:

1. Antoine born 1660 married 1681 Marie Thibodeau (Pierre & Jeanne Thériot)

2. René (son) born 1668 married 1691 Anne Thériot (Bonaventure & Jeanne Boudrot) (René is the paternal grandfather of Alexis Landry - Pioneer of Caraquet )

3. Abraham born 1678 married Oct. 5, 1701 Marie Guilbeau (François & Catherine Richard)
---->(Some say he died in Oxford, Maryland after being deported there with 7 of his 9 children)

4. Anne born 1684 married René Blanchard (Martin & Françoise LeBlanc)
