The "First International Encounter of Ballroom Dancing" has just finished. It was really great and both parts (brazilians and internationals) learned a lot with each other. In 1996 we shall have a national meeting where, among other things we will see what remained from the first and in 1997 there will be the second internatinal meeting. But what we learned ?
I, myself, learned
i) the slow-fox;
ii) the waltz (slow and Vienense besides, a taste of the "valse musette");
iii) the international jive style, a bit of "rock saute";
iv) salsa (cuban style);
v) Tango (Argentino) - this is already known here.
There was also cha-cha, but I did not have time to do every thing. Of course there was the Brazilian dances, like samba and lambada.
I must start by saying that what I said in my previous messages about ballroom dancing in Brazil was confirmed by this meeting. My memories from my ballroom dancing lessons in U.K. did not fail.
If any of you have the opportunity to talk to the teachers who came here
i) Luigi Marini (Italy);
ii) Andre Massaro, Daniel Avenel and Cathy Avenel (France);
iii) Mingo e Esther Pugliese (Argentina);,
iv) Caridad Rodrigues (Cuba);
do not miss it. Ask them about their impressions. It was confirmed that
very few people outside Brazil knew we have a ballroom samba so
different from the international style and so different from our own
"samba no pe'". Caridad from Cuba was also very impressed with our bolero
dancing and that is a compliment !
We, by our side, will incorporate a lot of the internatinal style in our dancing, from slow-fox and jive steps to a new boom of Walz, going through the posture and the elegance. I hope you we learn some of ours, therefore, next time I go there we will have a lot of more fun !
It was a good opportunity to notice that even inside Brazil, samba is danced in many different ways, depending on the region we are. Now that we have others Brazilians writting to the list, you will be able to have more information about brazilian ballroom samba than I could give alone.
Tchau, Filipe
