Further information about Quirrell we can find in the first book "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone":
Quirrell first appears in the Leaky Cauldron which is a pub in the magical world and he was one of the many people there who meet the young and famous Harry Potter.
Quirrell seems to be an extremely nervous and pale young man with a stutter and a twitching eye.
It was Rubeus Hagrid who is with Harry when they meet Quirrell who explains what Quirrell's problem is:
Quirrell was a brilliant mind, but he had taken a year off teaching at Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry to get some first-hand experience [I guess he grew bored of studying books].
Quirrell ended up in the Black Forest, where he ran into vampires and a hag and he was never the same since [of course, we all know exactly who Quirrell met in the Black Forest *coughs*, but we won't go into that now].
Because of his terrifying experience in the Black Forest Quirrell is left always trembling along with his nervous stutter and twitches and a fear of almost anything that moves:
He appears to be scared of vampires, seeing that his classroom smells strongly of garlic, scared of his students and even scared of his own subject.
But, as the story comes to an end, we see a very dark side to our cute and nervous professor.... ^_^
