There is no greater clarity
Than comes to one who knows
The passions of a pilgrimage,
The yearnings of a rose.
One learns not from immensities,
Nor reasons from the sea,
But travels down a track of words
To wordless ecstasy.
Only in the palaces
Of those who have endured
The pain of their own cruelty
Can power be secured.
For love is but a garden weed
That gathers in the gloom
To choke the chosen with its seed,
And dare the damned to bloom.
