After a disgraceful trial under an openly biased judge and a harsh sentence grossly disproportionate with the charge, demonstrations broke out in KL as an outpouring of disgust at a justice system sodomized by Mahathir. The peaceful gatherings were brutally suppressed  with tear gas, acid-laced water cannons and baton wielding riot police. Many were beaten up and random arrests made to intimidate the crowd.
