Mahathir Defends the ISA

KUALA LUMPUR MAY 7 (Seachange Malaysia) – Prime Minster Mahathir today lashed out at critics of the ISA, especially the 76 NGOs and Opposition parties who, on May 1, had launched an anti-ISA campaign, supported by their Western collaborators.

Describing these critics as first class morons, the Prime Minister said that they are obviously too blinkered, selfish and narrow-minded to appreciate the brilliancy of the ISA. “Don’t these whingers and do-gooders realise that the ISA is the piece of magic that will lead us to Vision 2020 ten years ahead of time? Do I really have to spell it out in detail for these morons?” he thundered.

While admitting that the ISA was a colonial invention, Mahathir nevertheless pointed out that he had refined it considerably, in particular, by removing judicial review of the indefinite detention without trial.

“It’s not as though I don’t own the courts. We have puppet judges galore who will jerk to our tune, but if you can save a step, why not?” he added.

According to Mahathir, the ISA, if widely used, could save the country billions of ringgit. “Previously, when we wanted to convict someone of false charges, we had to have the Attorney General frame them, the police to fabricate the evidence, and a puppet judge to send them to prison. Like in the case of Anwar Ibrahim. Nowadays, we just slap the ISA on them. It’s a lot more efficient and it saves time and money.”

Mahathir declared that in future, all arrests would be made under the ISA, whether it’s rape or theft or demonstrating. “Thus, if the police says you are guilty of whatever, than you are guilty. What is the point of investigating and collecting evidence and going to court and then appeal after appeal? What a terrific waste of manpower and resources. Just let the police deal with everything from the start. They alone decide whether a person is guilty and how long to keep the person in jail. They alone can decide whether to inflict extra punishment by various degrees of whipping and torture.

“Hence, there will be no need to retain the judiciary as a separate branch of government. This useless branch can be killed off, not that it was ever very much alive in the first place,” he sneered.

Mahathir also explained how Parliament would also become redundant with the ISA. If the Act is used vigorously on Opposition leaders, the Opposition parties will soon have no one to stand for elections. Hence, there will be no need for elections. And if there are no elections, why do we need a Parliament? “Even more savings for the nation, you see,” he added.

“Why do we need Parliament to pass hundreds of laws when we only need one law, that is, the ISA? This one law is quite enough to fix any disobedient fool who refuses to do what we want, from the estate worker right up to the King.

“Hence, only the Executive will remain as the sole government. Of course, it must be recognised that I am synonymous with the Executive,” Mahathir went on.

When a reporter asked whether that would make him Dictator, Mahathir gave him a withering look. “What do you think I’ve been all along, you stupid fool? Even now, Parliament and the judiciary are at my beck and call. But it’s time that we get rid of these expensive show pieces. We no longer care what the West says. They can go fry their private parts. My cronies need the money.”

According to the PM, the country should no longer be ashamed to declare itself a dictatorship which he said was the best form of government for a developing nation: “The ISA will enable us to get rid of all that useless embroidery, so it will be full speed ahead into the future you understand? That is why Western countries criticise us for this piece of legislation. They don't want us to race ahead, you understand? Now, whoever said that politics was hard?”
