When Thomas was 11, 15 Indians were lodged at the house of his father, three days later, July 27,1688, five friendly Indians were killed nearby and three weeks later, six white setters were killed. The murders were believed to have been committed by this band, and there were indications that this party of Indians had been hired by the French Government to kill and capture friendly Indians and settlers in English territory.

Two year after his father's death, Indians attacked his mother's house and scalped her and three of her daughters. After a painful recovery in 1699 Hepziba Buell Wells m. Daniel Belden. In 1704 Hepziba was captured during the attack on Deerfield and died on the way to Canada.

July 15, 1698, four Indians attacked men and boys working in the fields near Hatfield. Two men were killed and a man and boy were captured. When news reach Deerfield, thirteen men, including Thomas Wells III, went in pursuit. The traveled twenty miles at night to reach Vernon, VT. And set up an ambush on the river. At daybreak the Indian canoes came into sight they opened fire and the captives escaped. However a short time later, Jonathan Pomerory, 16 years old, was killed and the site was named,"Pomeroy's Island"

In 1725 Thomas led a large scouting party with Lt. Joseph Cleeson to the frontiers of Canada.

Ebenezer's father build the historic "Old Indian House" in Deerfield, whose scarred & battered door is preserved in the Memorial Hall in Deerfield. This house was occupied during the massacre on Feb 4, 1704. His mother was killed by a shot thru the door. She was shot thru the neck while sitting up in bed. Ebenezer was captured, as was his brother-in-law, Joseph Catlin and his sister, Mary, while her sister, Mercy was killed. His father made three trips to Canada (1705-1707) to recover the captives. He and his sister returned and lived in the "Old Indian House" until he sold it in 1744 to Jonathan Hoyt.

He was a private under Captains Phinehas Stevens and John Hawks in the French and Indian War and a Lt. Under Captains John Burke and John Catlin. He came home a Major [Deerfield History Vol II, p. 651 for his narrow escape after the capture of Ft. William Henry). He was a tavern keeper in Deerfield. When he left for the wars, he stopped next door to say good bye to the Nims family and there was a baby lying in the crib. He said to the mother "keep her until the wars are over and I will marry her". When he came home he settled down by himself. The mother remebering his earlier comment used to send her daughter over to tidy up his bachelor's quarters, In due time he was reminded of his promise and he fulfilled it. She outlived him by 31 years.
