Literature
LITERATURE should be one of your favorite subjects. If you're not reading, you're not learning everything that matters and you're not forcing your mind to work. It takes a bit of mental effort (and a dictionary) to read a book (and re-read the passages that you don't understand), but the end result is well worth it. Turn off the television, get off the Internet, get comfortable, and read a book. Do not lose the ability to think. Click on the links below to view my pages about various writers that I enjoy and/or admire.

Some entertaining or marvelous writers that I haven't taken the time to create a page for:
John Ashbery
James Patterson
John Sandford
You will perhaps notice a disproportionate number of male authors on this page. I'm sorry, but there are not many femme writers out there that I get into. SYLVIA PLATH was good, but crazy enough to be one of my ex-girlfriends. PATRICIA CORNWELL is entertaining if you're not in the mood to think.... Who else is there? GERTRUDE STEIN? Have you ever really tried to read her stuff?
Authors I intentionally left out because I think they are over-rated:
THEODORE DREISER
F. SCOTT FITZGERALD
ERNEST HEMINGWAY
ANNE RICE
ALFRED, LORD TENNYSON
JOHN UPDIKE
Edward R. Hamilton, Bookseller: A catalog of bargain books that are consistently of good quality and amazingly inexpensive. Start building your own library. Books are friends when your significant other doesn't call, and they comfort you in other times. Buy a book! NOTE: This is a link to a page that is not mine.
"...the light from the lighthouse that protects us as it pushes us away."
JOHN ASHBERY
DOWN BY THE STATION,
EARLY IN THE MORNING
"There's many a bestseller that could have been prevented by a good teacher."
FLANNERY O'CONNOR
"...and a kitchen with a cheap gas stove and a refrigerator that was missing a leg and so listed to the left, and made sloped ice cubes."
JOHN SANDFORD
(Great attention to detail)
"The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who cannot read them."
MARK TWAIN
"Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside a dog, it's too dark to read."
GROUCHO MARX
Reading can take you anywhere you want to go.
