Host Alan K. Rode is scheduled to introduce THE LONG HAUL with special guest Victoria Mature. THE LONG HAUL / BLACK GRAVEL
Presented by the American Cinematheque and the Film Noir Foundation

THE LONG HAUL
1957, Sony Repertory, 100 min, UK/USA, Dir: Ken Hughes

Harry Miller (Victor Mature), an American GI married to a British war bride (Gene Anderson), signs on as a long-haul lorry driver and finds the business rife with corruption, especially gangster Joe Easy (Patrick Allen). When Easy’s girl Lynn (Diana Dors) takes a shine to Harry, his sturdy moral fiber is stretched every which way. A well-wrought and amusingly sleazy British version of Hollywood trucking tales like THEY DRIVE BY NIGHT and THIEVES’ HIGHWAY, this satisfies the craving of noir addicts with its underworld misfits, shadowy atmospherics and voluptuous Dors doing all she can to mess with Mature’s marriage. With a thrilling climax right out of THE WAGES OF FEAR. http://americancinemathequecalendar.com/content/the-long-haul-black-gravel

Noir City 2020: ACT OF VIOLENCE & SOMEWHERE IN THE NIGHT
Presented by the American Cinematheque, the American Legion and the Film Noir Foundation

Tuesday, March 10 7:30 PM
Military Noir Double Feature: ACT OF VIOLENCE, 1948, Warner Bros., 81 min. Dir. Fred Zinnemann. A dark masterpiece made during the Metro tenure of producer Dore Schary, this is emblematic film noir. Psychically scarred Robert Ryan stalks war hero Van Heflin from sylvan Big Bear Lake to the nocturnal underbelly of downtown L.A. Robert Surtees stunning cinematography captures the dark side of the postwar boom, as well as superb performances from the entire cast, including a jaw-droppingly gorgeous 20-year-old Janet Leigh and a revelatory Mary Astor as a blowsy, street-wise hooker. Zinnemanns only foray into film noir is one of the best of the classic era.

An amnesiac vet (John Hodiak) prowls through the Los Angeles underworld searching for the mysterious Larry Cravat, the lone clue to his true identity. With Richard Conte, Lloyd Nolan, Nancy Guild and a rogue's gallery of familiar faces lending vivid support.

Trucker Film Noir Double Feature! In THE LONG HAUL, American GI Victor Mature signs on as a long-haul lorry driver and finds the business rife with corruption - and one of the gangsters molls hard to resist! BLACK GRAVEL follows a postwar German trucker whose attempt to cash in when the U.S. military sets up a missile base goes horribly wrong. Introduction to THE LONG HAUL with special guest Victoria Mature (daughter of Victor Mature).

THE LONG HAUL / BLACK GRAVEL
Presented by the American Cinematheque and the Film Noir Foundation

THE LONG HAUL
1957, Sony Repertory, 100 min, UK/USA, Dir: Ken Hughes (director of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!).
A well-wrought and amusingly sleazy British version of Hollywood trucking tales like THEY DRIVE BY NIGHT and THIEVES’ HIGHWAY, this satisfies the craving of noir addicts with its underworld misfits, shadowy atmospherics, and voluptuous Dors doing all she can to mess with Mature’s mariage. With a thrilling climax right out of THE WAGES OF FEAR.

SCHWARZER KIES (BLACK GRAVEL)
1961, Kino Lorber, 113 min, West Germany, Dir: Helmut Käutner.
A village in postwar Germany undergoes a nasty transformation when the US military decides it’s perfect for a missile base. Locals detest the occupying force, but they angle to cash in, legal and otherwise, on the economic boom. Neidhardt (Helmut Wildt), a prototypical noir character, works as a trucker in this blackest of markets, playing both sides of the law. His hustle turns horrifying, however, after a fatal accident plunges him further into ruthlessness and mayhem. Controversial on initial release due to its bitter depiction of a nation in the grip of defeat, lawlessness, and lingering anti-Semitism. This new 4K restoration by the Murnau Stiftung is Kautner's original cut, which was censored for political reasons and remained unseen since the film's 1961 premiere.

Screening format: DCP | BLACK GRAVEL in German with English subtitles. This new restoration has been completed in 4K by the Murnau Stiftung and features Käutner's director's cut, which was censored for political reasons and remained unseen since the film's 1961 premiere.

Noir City also pays a visit to the westside for an evening at the Aero Theatre curated by David Mamet, and to the Hollywood Legion Theater at Post 43 for a military noir double feature on March 10, of ACT OF VIOLENCE and SOMEWHERE IN THE NIGHT.
