Trivia

Sharp-tongued Hollywood commentator, who was denied top billing for Bride of Frankenstein (1935), even though she played the title role.

Biography from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia: She hissed her way into screen immortality (and had the movies' most memorable Bad Hair Day) as the titular temptress in Bride of Frankenstein (1935), her American film debut. Lanchester-who also played authoress Mary Shelley in that monstermovie milestone-delighted moviegoers on both sides of the Atlantic with her eccentric, sometimes impish characterizations. Trained as a dancer by Isadora Duncan, she turned to acting while still in her teens, and made her film debut in a 1924 short subject, The Scarlet Woman Lanchester, a dedicated nonconformist, married actor Charles Laughton in 1929, an unconventional union that lasted until his death in 1962. Her supporting roles in The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933, as Anne of Cleves) and The Private Life of Don Juan (1934) brought Lanchester to the attention of director James Whale, who cast her in Bride and launched her Hollywood career. She was Oscarnominated for her performances in Come to the Stable (1949, as a dotty artist) and Witness for the Prosecution (1957, as Laughton's exasperated nurse). Lanchester infused many of her screen characterizations with an almost childlike playfulness. She wrote an early volume of memoirs, "Charles and Me," in 1939, and an autobiography, "Elsa Lanchester Herself" in 1983. OTHER FILMS INCLUDE: 1935: David Copperfield (as Clickett); 1936: Rembrandt (costarring with Laughton), The Ghost Goes West 1942: Tales of Manhattan, Son of Fury 1943: Forever and a Day, Lassie Come Home 1946: The Spiral Staircase, The Razor's Edge 1947: The Bishop's Wife 1948: The Big Clock 1949: The Inspector General 1952: Les Miserables 1955: The Glass Slipper 1958: Bell, Book and Candle 1964: Mary Poppins, Pajama Party 1965: That Darn Cat 1968: Blackbeard's Ghost 1971: Willard 1973: Terror in the Wax Museum 1976: Murder by Death (delightful as Miss Marbles); 1980: Die Laughing.
