The Hunger

Catherine Deneuve as Miriam

Description:

Miriam, a beautiful 2000 year old vampire, needs help when she realizes that John, her current lover, is aging fast. Enter Sarah, a blood specilalist whose research involves geriatrics. Tony Scott's visually sumptuous tale is spun out with relatively tame lesbian love scenes and a mix of violence and sly humor. David Bowie (John), also adds the right element of sexual mystery.

Biography for Catherine Deneuve

Birth name
Catherine Dorleac
Date of birth
22 October 1943,
Paris, France

Catherine Deneuve was born in 1943, in Paris, France. Her parents were actors. She made her movie debut in 1957, when she was a teenager, and continued with small parts in minor films, until Roger Vadim gave her a meatier part in Vice et la Vertu, Le (1962). But her breakthrough came with the excellent musical Parapluies de Cherbourg, Les (1963), in which she gave an unforgettable performance as a romantic middle-class girl who falls in love with a young soldier, but gets imprisoned in a loveless marriage with another man; the director was the gifted Jacques Demy who also cast Deneuve in the less succesful Demoiselles de Rochefort, Les (1967). She then played a schizophrenic killer in Roman Polanski's Repulsion (1965) and a married woman who works as a part-time prostitute every afternoon in Bunuel, Luis's masterpiece Belle de jour (1967). She also worked with Bunuel in Tristana (1970) and gave a great perormance for Truffaut in Sirne du Mississippi, La (1969), a kind of apotheosis of her "frigid femme fatale" persona. In the seventies she didn't find parts of that caliber, but her magnificent work in Truffaut's Last Metro, The (1980), as a stage actress in Nazi-occupied Paris revived her career. She was also very good in the recent epic drama Indochine (1992), for which she earned her first Academy Award Nominaton (Best Actress). Although the elegant and always radiant Deneuve has never appeared on stage, she is universally hailed as one of the "grandes dames" of French cinema, joining a list that includes such illustrious talents as Simone Signoret, Jeanne Moreau, Isabelle Huppert and the younger Juliette Binoche.

Biography from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia: Breathtakingly beautiful blond actress who for many years was France's top female screen star. Her icy manner was skillfully exploited by directors Roman Polanski (in 1965's Repulsion and Luis Buuel (in 1967's Belle de Jour and 1970's Tristana, among others. She was equally effective in a pair of Franois Truffaut films, The Mississippi Mermaid (1968) and The Last Metro (1980). Deneuve also delivers lighter, more accessible performances as well: she was utterly charming, for example, in The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964), the film that brought her international recognition following several years of desultory screen appearances. Still a ravishing beauty, Deneuve has unfortunately limited her U.S. exposure in recent years to TV commercials and occasional films such as The Hunger (1983, in a surprisingly erotic role as a vampire) and Scene of the Crime (1986, a muddled psychological thriller). She earned her first Oscar nomination for Indochine (1992).

A free-spirited nonconformist, Deneuve has given birth out of wedlock to children fathered by former lovers Roger Vadim and Marcello Mastroianni. Her sister, Franoise Dorleac, was herself a talented actress whose career was cut short by a tragic car accident in 1967; they costarred in Jacques Demy's The Young Girls of Rochefort (1968).
