Practical Magic

Sandra Bullock as Sally 'Sal' Owens

Description:

Sally and Gillian Owens have always known they were different. Raised by their aunts (Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing) after their parents' death, the sisters grew up in a household that was anything but typical--their aunts fed them chocolate cake for breakfast and taught them the uses of practical magic. But the invocation of the Owens' sorcery also carries a price--some call it a curse: the men they fall in love with are doomed to an untimely death. Now adult women with very different personalities, the quiet Sally and the fiery Gillian must use all of their powers to fight the family curse and a swarm of supernatural forces that threatens the lives of all the Owens women.

Born in a Virginia suburb of Washington D.C. to a German opera singer and a voice teacher, she grew up on the road with her parents and younger sister. She often performed in the children's chorus of whatever production her mother was in. That singing talent later came in use for her role of an aspiring country singer in Thing Called Love, The (1993). Her family moved back to the Washington D.C. area when she was a teenager. She later enrolled in E. Carolina University in North Carolina, USA where she studied acting. Shortly thereafter she moved to New York to pursue a career on the stage. This led to acting in television programs and then feature films. She gave memorable performances in Demolition Man (1993) and Wrestling Ernest Hemingway (1993) but did not achieve the stardom that seemed inevitable for her until her work in the smash hit Speed (1994). Personal quotes

(on marital plans) "I've always been very sceptical about marriage, because I only want to do it once; I want to do it the right way."

"I've learned that success comes in a very prickly package. Whether you choose to accept it or not is up to you. It's what you choose to do with it, the people you choose to surround yourself with. Always choose people that are better than you. Always choose people that challenge you and are smarter than you. Always be the student. Once you find yourself to be the teacher, you've lost it."

"I remember sitting down in Joel Silver's office and Joel going, 'Do you want to do this film?' I remember going, 'I would like to do it, but I would love to talk about the character,' and it was almost like I had said the biggest joke."

The only reason I haven't married yet, is because I take it too seriously.

"Austin has its own rhythm going. you never know when you'll fall in love, you don't expect it. and I fell in love with Austin. I've gone there to build my home. My roots. I'm building a home there with family in mind, children and grandchildren."

"Fame means when your computer modem is broken, the repair guy comes out to your house a little faster."
