Alida Valli as Miss Tanner, Joan Bennett as Madame Blanc, and Margherita Horowitz as the Teacher

Description:

A young American dancer travels to Europe to join a famous ballet school. As she arrives, the camera turns to another young woman, who appears to be fleeing from the school. She returns to her apartment where she is gruesomely murdered by a hideous creature. Meanwhile, the young American is trying to settle in at the ballet school, but hears strange noises and is troubled by bizarre occurrences. She eventually discovers that the school is merely a front for a much more sinister organisation.

Biography for Joan Bennett

Birth name
Joan Geraldine Bennett
Date of birth
27 February 1910
Palisades, New Jersey, USA
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joan Geraldine Bennett was born on February 27, 1910 in Palisades, New Jersey. Her parents were both involved in the theater as actors. The parents, especially her father, Richard, were very successful in their craft, often touring the country for weeks at a time. In fact, Joan came from a long lineage of actors, dating back to the eighteenth century. Often, when her parents were on tour, Joan and her two older sisters, Constance, who later became an actress herself, and Barbara, were left in the care of close friends. At the age of four, Joan made her first stage appearance. Joan's first film was one year later in a production called THE VALLEY OF DECISION, in which her father was the star and the entire Bennett participated. In 1923, Joan, again, appeared in a film which starred her father. She played a page boy in THE ETERNAL CITY. It would be five more years before Joan appeared on the silver screen. In between, she married Jack Marion Fox, who was 26 compared to her young age of 16. The union was anything but happy with Fox drinking heavily. In February, 1928, Joan and Jack had a baby girl which they named Adrienne. The new arrival did little to help the marriage. In the summer of 1928, they divorced. Now with a baby to support, Joan did something she had no intention of doing--she turned to acting. She appeared in POWER (1928) with Alan Hale and Carole Lombard. Although it was a very small role, it was a start. In 1929, she starred in BULLDOG DRUMMOND, sharing top billing with Ronald Colman. Before the year was out, she was in three more films, DISRAELI, MISSISSIPPI GAMBLER, and THREE LIVE GHOSTS. Not only did the theater patrons like her, so did the critics. Between 1930 and 1931, Joan appeared in nine more movies. In 1932, Joan starred opposite Spencer Tracy in SHE WANTED A MILLIONAIRE. The film wasn't one that Joan liked to remember and, also, was one in which Tracy couldn't stand the fact that everyone was paying more attention to her and not to him. Joan was to remain busy and popular throughout the remainder of the 1930's and into the 1940's. By the 1950's, Joan was well into her forties and began to slow down her filming. She made only eight motion pictures plus was in two television series. After DESIRE IN THE DUST in 1960, Joan would be absent from the movie scene for the next ten years, resurfacing in HOUSE OF DARK SHADOWS, reprising her role from the Dark Shadows TV series, as Elizabeth Collins Stoddard. Joan's final screen appearance was in 1977's SUSPIRIA. Her final public performance was in television's, Divorce Wars: A Love Story in 1982. On December 7, 1990, Joan died of a heart attack in Scarsdale, New York. She was 80 years old.

Trivia

Pregnant with daughter Melinda Markey while filming Little Women (1933).

Filming on She Wanted a Millionaire (1932) was interrupted for 6 months when Joan broke her leg in a fall from a horse.

Joan sang in films with her own voice; she was never dubbed.

Joan Bennett was one of only three cast members who appeared on "Dark Shadows" (1966) from the beginning to the end. She appeared on the first episode, June 27, 1966, as well as its last, April 2, 1971.

Personal quotes

"I don't think much of most of the films I made, but being a movie star was something I liked very much."

"I feel positively like a Beatle, " Joan Bennett in response to the attention she was getting with the success of Dark Shadows.

'My film career faded. A man can go on playing certain roles till he's sixty. But not a woman' 'The golden age is gone, and with it most of the people of great taste. It doesn't seem to be any fun any more' (1984)

Biography from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia:

Undeniably beautiful but frequently vapid leading lady of the 1930s who blossomed into a more interesting actress during the 1940s. The daughter of actor Richard Bennett and younger sister of actress Constance, she attended expensive boarding schools before taking up acting in 1928 (she had, as a small child in 1916, appeared on-screen in her father's The Valley of Decision Samuel Goldwyn cast her as a youthful damsel-in-distress opposite Ronald Colman in the wildly successful Bulldog Drummond (1929), a star-making role that led her first to Warner Bros.where she appeared opposite the studio's top male stars, George Arliss (in 1929's Disraeli and John Barrymore (in 1930's Moby Dick-and then to Fox. She stayed at the latter studio for several years, starring in many handsomely made but unimportant programmers, such as Scotland Yard (1930), Hush Money (1931), She Wanted a Millionaire, Careless Lady, The Trial of Vivienne Ware, Weekends Only, Wild Girl (all 1932, the last named a tongue-in-cheek adaptation of Bret Harte's "Salomy Jane's Kiss," and one of her most charming vehicles), and Arizona to Broadway (1933).

Bennett freelanced for a time, playing Amy in RKO's Little Women (1933) and assuming leading-lady chores in The Man Who Reclaimed His Head and The Pursuit of Happiness (both 1934) before settling at Paramount, where she appeared in Private Worlds, Mississippi (opposite Bing Crosby and W. C. Fields), Two for Tonight, She Couldn't Take It (all 1935), Big Brown Eyes, 13 Hours by Air, Two in a Crowd, Wedding Present (all 1936), The Texans and Artists and Models Abroad (both 1938). During this period she was loaned to costar with Colman in The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo (1935) and Warner Baxter ("He wore three-inch heels," was all the taciturn Bennett would ever say about this leading man) in Vogues of 1938 (1937).

Independent producer Walter Wanger hired Bennett to costar in Trade Winds a 1938 romantic drama released by United Artists, in which she dyed her hair black to help disguise herself. She kept it black offscreen as well, and for the rest of her life. Oddly enough, the change in hair color seemed to bring with it a new vitality in her performances. She played spirited queens in two swashbucklers, The Man in the Iron Mask (1939) and The Son of Monte Cristo (1940), and struggled gamely with a Cockney accent in Fritz Lang's Man Hunt (1941). Bennett was decorative at best in Confirm or Deny (1941), Twin Beds (1942), Margin for Error (1943), and others before again starring for Lang as a scheming femme fatale in The Woman in the Window (1944), turning in her best work to date. Lang used her again-with equal success-in Scarlet Street (1945) and The Secret Beyond the Door (1948). Director Max Ophuls did fairly well with her in The Reckless Moment (1949), in which she played a murderer pursued by blackmailer James Mason.

Bennett made a glamorous mother (to Elizabeth Taylor) in Father of the Bride (1950, costarring with Spencer Tracy), a role she reprised in Father's Little Dividend (1951). But the balance of her screen output was sparse, perhaps owing to the scandal resulting from the 1952 shooting of her agent, Jennings Lang, by an insanely jealous Wanger (who'd married her in 1940). Her subsequent films include Highway Dragnet (1954), We're No Angels (1955), There's Always Tomorrow (1956), Desire in the Dust (1960), House of Dark Shadows (1970, playing the role she'd originated on TV in the popular Gothic soap opera), Inn of the Damned (1974), and Suspiria (1977). After making a few minor telefilms, Bennett retired to her fourth husband, writer David Wilde, who remained devoted to her until her death in 1990. She became active in the cosmetics business, and published her autobiography (which also chronicled her colorful family), "The Bennett Playbill," in 1970.
