Not without reason, Tarragona was one of the most important administrative centres of the Roman Empire in the Mediterranean. The Medol, which is an ancient Roman quarry, is one example of the great variety of Roman remains that can be found in and around Tarragona. The area was declared a conservation area in 1931 and is the location of "l'agulla del Mèdol" (the needle of the Medol), a Roman obelisk. It is also of great interest for its forest. The Medol can be reached from the road service area of the same name.
