My Opinion about Education

Education seems to be one of the social programs that is in the most danger of being cut back and reduced. A couple of years ago there was quite a scare about "non-essential" programs here in Alberta and we heard that all non-core subjects were going to be removed from the curriculum (including music, art, the IB program, and physical education). However, these changes never took place and I think the reason was the tremendous backlash against removing these programs.

I oppose cuts to education since there are few long-term benefits to reducing the potential productivity of a country's or province's citizens. It appears that education is expensive in the present, but it has tremendous long-term effects on the economy of the province/country. Giving students an excellent education makes them compatitive in the international arena and can bring publicity, funding, and research to the province/country.

Although the Alberta education system is quite good, I endorse the International Baccalaureate program as well. Students who are capable of taking this program should do so since it inproves study and learning skills and provides much more in-depth information than that which is covered in the Alberta curriculum. For more information, check out the International Baccalaureate Organization page or my IB page.

Opinion on Politics (Canadian)

Gee what a choice! June 2 is only a few days away and I still don't know who to vote for. Well, there's the Liberals who have a rather blemished track record, the PC's who are now taking advice from Brian Molruney, the Reform party that wants to institute American style healthcare, the NDP who are bordering on left-ing extremism, and oh yes, the Natural Law party that wants to institute yogic flying to get rid of the deficit. How about the rhinocerous party, anybody? Seriously though, I find that I would vote for the party that fits best with my position on the political spectrum (NDP or Liberal). The Liberals have made some very big mistakes this term and my vots should re flect my dissappointment with their performance. On the other hand, I doubt any other government would have handled itself any better. The NDP is a champion of universal healthcare, but I don't know how such spending would affect the economy. Furthermore, I feel a little uncomfortable with their extremism. Parties I definately won't vote for are PC, BQ and Reform. So I guess I'll just have to choose between the two leftist parties. And if you couldn't guess, I'n NOT voting for NL!

The provincial election really frightened me. After all the complaints about cutbacks, how could we re-elect the PC party? Understaffed hospitals have been asking for a change for a long time now but I guess healthcare wasn't that important to Albertans as I thought it would be. Schools, shelters, and aid organisations have been sending the same message but it seems to be droned out through the voice of popularity.
