Movies such as Akira, Steetfighter II: The Animated Movie, Lensman, 8Man After, Wicked City, Vampire Hunter D, and Ghost in the Shell have really influenced the way I see animation. I can't get enough of it. That is why I have dedicated a whole page to anime films, or as people prefer to call it Japanese animation flicks.
I just purchased the film Ninja Scroll. This film is amazing! It features the best anime I've seen in a long time. If you haven't seen it yet, go out and rent, you won't be disappointed.
On August 5th, 1997, I went to see Perfect Blue, the new Japanese animated film from the producers of "Memories" at FantAsia '97 in Montreal. The line-up for this film was incredible, it went completely around the building. The film was sold out, but they had an extra screening of the film because of the large turn-out.
The film is about a pop-singer, Mima Kirigoe, who drops her singing career to take up acting. Depressed and stressed out from her career change, she suddenly discovers that there is someone out there who looks exactly like her, uses her name and to make things even more strange, this dead ringer is invisible to all, except Mima can see her. Regardless, she continues to work, and a number of mysterious accidents occur to the people around her, and she realizes that there is chilling resemblance between her own life and that of the character she plays on TV. Mima, scared and confused, must try to solve this mystery, and figure out what is real and what is not.
This is a taut, psychological thriller which shouldn't be missed. I was able to see the world premiere of the film (the flim won't hit Japanese theaters until January 1998), and I even got an autograph from Hiroaki Inoue, one of the producers of the film. She also presented the film to the eager audience.
Perfect Blue also won the Public Prize for best film at Fantasia '97, triggering interest from distributors from the United States. Perfect Blue will next be screened at MIFED in October 1997, an industry-only event in Milan, Italy.
Special thanks to the Chrisman for the "Perfect Blue" pics. Merci buckets homey, Mr. St. Cibz de Tabz Mac Lab computer addict of a $2 ho and a half who's a cyber - techno - industrial - rural - red light district - suburban boy, the guy who's a coliss complaining, movie watching, wretch hating and Maxi & Crap working biatch! :)
The only Japanese anime film I saw at FantAsia '98 was Black Jack (1996). The lead character, Black Jack is a lone underground surgeon who charges millions for his extraordinary surgical operations. When the super-humans, athletes who are capable of going to the extreme in showing greatness in breaking new records at the olympics, begin showing signs of decay and rapid-aging, Black Jack soon discovers he has to face a deadly lethal virus which can endanger the lives of everyone on the planet.
A very suspenseful and intense story of the struggle to ward off the end of mankind. The animation is top-notch. Do not miss out on this one.
