(see also 10 April 2005 - Knee Pain - Fixing Bikes)

today, the physio figured out what was wrong with my right knee.

the knee cap, which, as it moves back forth while the leg is flexing, travels in a groove.

the knee cap is embedded in the tendon which joins the upper leg to the lower leg. this tendon attaches to the top of the bone of the lower leg directly below the knee cap. as the knee flexes, the bone below the knee pulls the tendon which runs the knee cap smoothly and inline through the groove.

unfortunately, i had something call osgoode-schlatters disease during puberty, which caused the top of my lower leg bone to swell. the swelling is off-centre, which causes the tendon to pull the knee cap out of line with the groove.

with repeated motion, this inflames the cartilage an my knee gets sore. prognosis: can't be fixed. prescription: ride less than 2 hours at a time.

the good news is that my leg muscles and joints had a thorough examination and they are doing very well.
