After a lot of uncertainties surrounding the tournament, Momentum One Day Cup went ahead with some restrictions and we finally have our four semifinalists. It was a mouth-watering competition in the group stage as the semifinal fixtures were determined only after the last group game was played.
The first semifinal is to be played between Dolphins and Cape Cobras on 1st February 2021 at Senwes Park, Potchefstroom. While the Dolphins were the best team in Group A of the competition, Cape Cobras gained form and momentum by the end of the group stage. Both sides have momentum and it is going to be a cracker of a contest when these two sides meet on Monday.
As the points table is reflecting, the Dolphins were the best team from Group A. They experienced a few hiccups here and there but eventually qualified for the playoffs with significant ease. They ended the group stage with 13 points and a terrific net run-rate of 1.29. All of that, however, is going to be inconsequential in the knockouts.
Momentum One Day Cup had its matches stacked one after the other and the fact that Dolphins have stayed away from the action for a while may actually work against them. While all their players will be fresh and raring to go, they might lack the momentum that the Cobras will be having. Therefore, the last results of the Dolphins might not matter as much. In fact, the two of the last three matches that the Dolphins had in their schedule were washed out due to rain.
In the two matches that produced results, the Dolphins were clearly a better team as they defeated Titans and Knights with pretty large margins respectively. Also, the Dolphins are the only team that are yet to be defeated in this tournament.
On paper, Dolphins have a side that oozes experience throughout their lineup. Their batting lineup consists of stalwarts like David Miller, Andile Phehlukwayo, Robbie Frylicnk, and Khaya Zondo. Apart from those, the Dolphins have the services of Marques Ackerman and Grant Roelofsen at the top who both looked pretty solid in the group stage. Considering the way they performed in the group stage and the kind of lineup they have, the Dolphins cannot be taken lightly by any team.
Grant Roelofsen, Mangaliso Mosehle, Khaya Zondo, Marques Ackerman, Senuran Muthusamy, Ruan de Swardt, Robert Frylinck, P Subrayen, Kerwin Mungroo, Eathan Bosch, Ottneil Baartman.
Cape Cobras have clearly stunned one and all as they defied all odds to not only bounce back into contention but also by actually qualifying for the semifinals. After their first two defeats, against Warriors and Lions respectively, they looked out and needed to register two comprehensive wins. And they did that nonchalantly. They eventually finished at the second spot with 10 points and a net run-rate of -0.089.
Their win against the Warriors followed a pattern pretty similar to their win over the Lions. The only difference, perhaps, was that the Cobras were chasing a set total against the Warriors. Chasing a total of 262, Cobras' openers sealed the deal without any damage. They were nicely placed with 134 runs on the board before rain prevented any further play. Janneman Malan scored 69 and Pieter Malan contributed with 58.
Earlier with the ball, the Cobras did well to keep Warriors to a manageable total. Ziyaad Abrahams picked up 3 wickets for 52 and was the pick of the Cobras' bowlers. One could argue that the Cobras' bowlers were a tad expensive, but the fans would take it considering the bowlers managed to pick wickets at regular intervals. On paper, the Cobras have an inexperienced bowling unit and that could be a concern for them against a potent team like Dolphins. Having said that, batting seems to be the stronger suit for the Cobras and that is what they'll be banking on.
Apart from the Malan pair at the top, the Cobras will rely heavily on Zubayr Hamza, Tony de Zorzi, and Jonathan Bird who all have done pretty well in the tournament so far. If their mainstays manage to perform the way they did in the last two matches, there's no reason why the Cobras cannot emerge on top and qualify for the finale.
Pieter Malan, Christiaan Jonker, Tony de Zorzi, Zubayr Hamza, Aviwe Mgijima, Jonathan Bird, JF Smith, Onke Nyaku, Imran Manack, Corbin Bosch, Ziyaad Abrahams.

The tournament followed a pretty strange schedule as Group B fixtures started only after Group A standings were finalized. Cape Cobras qualified pretty recently and being in match practice can certainly play to their advantage. Having said that, they'll be pretty fatigued given the packed schedule that Group B followed. On paper, the two sides are pretty matched as far as their respective batting is concerned. However, Dolphins have a more experienced set of bowlers and that could come in handy in a high-pressure encounter like this. Apart from that, the Dolphins have a better-balanced side with the presence of versatile all-rounders in their lower-middle order. For those reasons, we expect Dolphins to register a win in the upcoming match and progress a step closer to the title.
