Around a week ago, not many would have expected Sri Lanka to hand Australia the kind of drubbing they have. They suffered a 2-1 defeat in the T20I series that preceded the ODI series. Although there is still a match to go in the series, the series is already decided and both sides will know their takeaways from the series.
Still, the only remaining match - the 5th ODI, will have something for both these sides before the two sides go on to meet in the longest format of the game. Australia will want to ensure that they redeem themselves with a win here whereas Sri Lanka would want to end the ODI series by asserting their dominance once again.
The fifth ODI of the series between Sri Lanka and Australia is to be played on 24th June 2022 at R Premadasa Cricket Stadium, Colombo.
There is a lot going on around Sri Lanka apart from cricket, but this win has certainly brought about a big smile on the faces of a number of fans in Sri Lanka. A series win against Australia is always big regardless of the conditions or the format. Sri Lanka have already taken the series but they would not want to settle for anything less than a 4-1 win.
Sri Lanka were never the favorites coming into the series and they started their tour on a similar trajectory as they lost the first one despite fighting hard. After that, however, they have been brilliant in both departments of the game with their spinners leading the charge. The spinners have been so good for them that they fielded as many as four full-time spinners in the previous match, bowling 43 spin overs in total.
Sri Lanka gained strength from their consistently performing top-order with the likes of Kusal Mendis, Pathum Nissanka, and Dananjaya de Silva doing exceedingly well. Also, with Wanindu Hasaranga available down the order, they have a batting lineup that goes deep. All in all, Sri Lanka have done an impressive job up until now and will be confident of repeating the feat in this upcoming match too. If their batsmen are able to support their bowlers well, Sri Lanka will be on their way to complete a 4-1 win over the Aussies.

It wasn't really expected from a full-strength Australian side having won a T20I World Cup recently and with most of their players being in fine form to lose the ODI series as badly as they have done. Yes, there were a few close shaves but they were massively outplayed by Sri Lanka. There were a few injuries that they suffered in between and it would be interesting to see the side they field in the upcoming match.
The Aussies are coming off a close loss in the fourth ODI. They did most things right in the first half of the match, but then failed to close things out in the second innings. They have been just as poor in both the departments, as far as consistency is concerned. Their batsmen posted a decent enough total in the third ODI, but then the bowlers did an impressive job in the second innings as they failed to defend an above-par total.
In the fourth ODI, the Aussies managed to keep Sri Lanka to an under-par total, but then the batsmen were a little too adventurous as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. On paper, the Aussies have a decent side with almost all bases covered. However, their ability to deal with the spinners is coming under the scanner big time. Also, they are sending Maxwell, arguably their best player to take on the spinners, a little too low. They have a lot to take care of going into this upcoming match and if they are able to handle the spinners well, they would be a threat to deal with.

Sri Lanka have certainly surprised their fans and critics alike and they would want to go one step further with a win here. Australia's vulnerabilities against the spinners have been clearly highlighted in the series so far and they would need to really up their game to get past the Sri Lanka spinners. The match-winners in Glenn Maxwell and David Warner will need to be at their best. Sri Lanka have been a better side between the two, but the Aussies did show some signs of getting some rhythm back. Having said that, Sri Lanka have a much better-performing team between the two and a better-side on paper as well. Considering that and the other factors stated above, we would be placing our bets on yet another Sri Lanka win and so should you.
David Warner had a quiet series up until the last match, in which he missed his century by just one run. While he did not get the century, that innings would have imbibed him with immense amount of confidence. He is someone who is equally good against all kinds of bowling and can really take the attack to the opposition once set. A bet on Warner to be the best batsman from the visitors' camp seems to be a pretty lucrative option.
Australia have struggled against the spinners in the competition so far and to compensate that, they might we target the quicker bowlers in the powerplay. In Finch and Warner, the have a couple of excellent batsmen of pace. On the other hand, we can expect Sri Lanka to be a bit more relaxed up front. Considering that, we would be placing a bet on Australia to have a higher score at the end of the first 15 overs.
