Player Notes!
The Neglected Saxophonist by Vic Bland The Concert Band Saxophonist is probably
the most neglected of all the instrumentalists in the ensemble. Their
primary role is to be able to wear many different "musical hats" as they
are expected to play legit, show styles, swing, jazz and rock all within
an evenings performance. Many times the saxophone player will take on
the role of blending with the french horns in an arrangement to act as
a bridge between the high and low winds and brass. In the same number,
he/she would need to play in sectional/ensemble style while in the next
bar play a solo. Im sure you will agree this can be a very demanding
and challenging role to fill successfully.
At the Bark Lake Saxophone Camp all of these important
aspects ofplaying will be addressed in thecurriculum
in addition to the general playing and practice techniques. Saxophone
players will have the opportunity to perform in a large and small ensemble
devoted entirely to saxophone music.
The retreat is for all players at all levels. A relaxed,
non-pressured atmosphere helps to remove any frustrations or obstacles
that get in the way of improving ones playing. Only then can you receive
the fullest
enjoyment possible from playing your instrument. Without lifes daily
distractions or stress, it is more likely you will be able to focus better;
getting absorbed into the never-ending possibilities of playing. It is
in no way competitive, and players of all levels will benefit highly from
this experience.
Outside of the obvious learning opportunities, you will
meet other sax players, make new friends and share experiences and new
ideas. And what better way to take off the edge and enjoy your saxophone
experience by participating in the many fun outdoor activities available
at Bark Lakes resort.
We hope to see you there.
