I wish I could find my place among these words

They hinder my walk

Blinding, strobe like

always unpredictable

I wish the cascade would stop…

Then I fear it will

Robot like, Trance like,

Each day I wake holding my breath

I send forth my senses

Would that I had some sign of the next word

I could then brace for the worst or savor the best

Unable to grasp the timing, all things are colored by fear

Apprehension tugs at my heels

Serenity coyly dances beyond my reach

It is a seductive, empty promise that hides between

Denial and acceptance

Laughter, singing and alcohol

help build a wall of protection

But the wall crumbles faster than I can build

In the end

I am left exhausted and defenseless…

Sobriety offers a drudgery that dulls my senses

and crushes my spirit

Both sides of the fence are bare

So I continue to build my walls

Frantically hoping for, and dreading

The next word.
