rebound

Rebound

think I'm starting to understand,
do you? caught the bitch on the rebound,
now we will, for a bit, bounce around
on swings of mood
so radical they are seatless,

driving unfamiliar roads
without our glasses,
without any sleep,
tossing paradigms and soda cans
out of the cab,

careening away from before
as if from a war
as if we could escape it.
When we arrive, why are we surprised
to discover the wreckage?

should we stop and survey it?
should we pick through the rubble?
might we leave something precious
in our haste to escape?
can you hold me

in this scorched field,
can you listen to me cry?
my wonder is in short supply, though
it works assiduously to
allow you and I.

the source not fatally corrupted,
a cloudy well but potable still,
wonder plunges to the well.
so if you will
just give us a minute

or a second of belief, I believe
I can promise a safe journey
home, or between you and me,
the means we need
to build the home we will call our own.
