The family occurs on all continents except
Australia. They are also almost absent from the tropical Asian region. Four
subfamilies are recognized Alocandreninae, Panurginae, Andreninae & Oxaeinae.
Based upon the phylogenetic characters (Alexander & Michener, 1995), Oxaeinae
appeared as part of the Andrenidae. Rozen's (1993, 1994) studies of larvae
showed the same thing: Euherbstia in the Andrenidae appeared as the
sister group to the Oxaeinae. Thus both larval and adult characters indicate
that the Oxaeinae are much modified (i.e. with many derived characters)
Andrenidae (Michener, 2000). Only four genera occur in our specified
area. Andrena & Melittoides belong to Andreninae and,
Camptopoeum
&
Plesiopanurgus
belong to Panurginae.
