An Annotated                Catalogue of the

Bee Species of the

Indian Region

 Subfamily Dasypodainae Börner

[Family Melittidae]

The subfamily is found in the Palearctic region, in North America (mostly western) and, in Africa. Three tribes are recognized in Dasypodainae namely, Promelittini, Dasypodaini and Sambini. Among these first one reaches upto our flexible area of western region to Indian region. With regard to tribe Dasypodaini, many illustrations of structures and phylogenetic tree were presented by Michener (1981), for immatures Rozen and McGinley (1974) and Rozen (1978), for nestings Muller (1884), Malyshev (1927), Blagoveshchenskaya (1963), Lind (1968) and, Radchenko (1987).

Promelittini occurs in Egypt and possibly in South Africa. Warncke (1977) proposed genus (as a subgenus of Melitta) Promelitta, the lone genus constituent of the tribe. Sambini is distributed in eastern and southern Africa, mostly confined to xeric areas. Michener (1981) described phylogeny of this tribe.
