The family including sweat bees, are the
commonmost bees in number of individuals after Apis. Species are quite
widely distributed in both
hemisphere. This is a large family subdivided in to four subfamilies namely,
Rophitinae, Nomiinae, Nomioidinae and Halictinae.
Warncke (1979) revised the entire Rophitinae.
South American genera of this subfamily were revised by Rozen (1997). A
series of publications taxonomically revising Halictini were published by Ebmer
(1969 to 1995). Eickwort (1969), Mitchell, Moure and Hurd (1987)
recognized genera differeing in trivial characters. Rozen (1993), Snelling and
Stage (1995), Iwata (1976), Wcislo and Engel (1996) are some of the important
references with regards to nesting biology and immatures. Tribe Augochlorini is
more or less restricted to American continent. major works regarding this tribe
are Sandhouse (1937), Mitchell (1960), Eickwort (1969), Engel, Brooks and Yanega
(1997) and, for nestings Michener (1962), Sakagami (1964), Eickwort (1973),
Eickwort and Sakagami (1979) and, Engel (2000) for tribe Augochlorini. A good number of genera have their representatives
in our specified region. However, most of the species are awaiting taxonomic
revision. Therefore, genera with major number of species like Halictus
and Nomia are infect listed here as sensu lato.
