200 metres from
Peterson Island refuge there is a stone cairn and a brass capsule
with a copy of the proclaimation by Lt Cdr Charles Browning to note
to the American landing in 1947, and a US flag with 48 stars on
it .
The area was originally aerialy
surveyed and mapped by the Americans during Operation High Jump
and Operation Windmill in 1946-47
The term Operation Windmill
is a popular expression which developed after the expedition disbanded
and refers to the extensive use of helicopters made by the group.
The official title of this expedition was Second Antarctic Development
Project, U.S. Task Force 39, 1947-48.
