Davis is the
most southerly Australian Antarctic Station and is situated 4,700km
south-south-west of Perth, at 68 ° 35' South, 77 ° 58' East,
and is located on the the rocky coast of the ice-free edge
of the Vestfold Hills.
Davis station opened in January
1957 and is named after Captain John King Davis (1884-1967), master
of ships used on expeditions led by Shackleton and Mawson.
During its first years, Davis
accommodated very small wintering parties, in some cases just 4-5
men stayed through the long polar night.
The major scientific programs
undertaken in and around Davis are biology, geomorphology, geomagnetism,
geology,, middle and upper atmosphere physics, medicine, palaentology,
botany, meteorology, climate change studies, examination of the
sedimentary history of the lakes in the Larsemann Hills, snow drift
observation, experiments and measurements |
