Marine Science
- Retrieve / Refurbish
/ Deploy one of five ARGO sediment trap bouys |
Sediment
Traps collect oceanic settling
particles from depths range from 1 to 4 km below the surface.
The study can
be extrapolated from our sites to larger areas of the Southern
Ocean by considering the regional oceanography. The results tell
us about the flux of various elements raining down, for example
giving an indication of how the Southern Ocean acts as a carbon
sink, which is important in understanding greenhouse gas control
and global warming.

CAMP
QUALITY is an organisation
that raises money for the benefit of children with cancer, many
of whom undergo chemotherapy. The Aurora Australis has been supporting
this charity for around 10 years now and money raised from social
events held on the ship is donated at the end of each Antarctic
season. So each voyage we try and do our bit to give a little, feel
good about it and have some fun in the process.
Quiz
Night - Sunday10th October
After several days and nights
of sloshing around and not doing much than grunting to people you
pass in the corridor it's time to get your thinking caps on!
So weather permitting, the
quiz night will run this Sunday. The theme is "UP, UP AND AWAY"
to celebrate the new fixed wing aircraft flights from Casey, the
enormous heli fly-off and the sporadic emergence of moorings from
the depths of the ocean - and you should come dressed appropriately
(you may interpret that as you will - points will be gained for
creative outfits)
There will be penalty of $3
payable to the Camp Quality fund if no effort is made!! |

Iceberg
Sweep The iceberg sweepstake is traditionally
run on each voyage. The idea is to guess to the closest 15 minutes
(rounded up) the time that the first iceberg is seen. (starting
from midday Sunday 17th until midnight Monday 25th.)
You can chose as many time allocations as you like - 50 cents
each or 5 for $2
-
The winning
time is when the iceberg is directly abeam of the ship
-
It must
be within 5 nm of the ship
-
The time
is determined by the officer on watch
