Street Closings: 2009 Summer Playstreet
|
2004 Summer
Playstreet Application Procedures |
In order to have your
Playstreet approved in time, you should submit completed forms as soon
as possible and before May 3rd. The Bureau of Traffic
Operations must conduct field surveys and applications received after
the deadline will be placed on a waiting list and cannot be guaranteed
processing.
What is a Summer Playstreet
A summer playstreet is a
city street reserved for recreation for school age children and others
during the weekday daylight hours of the summer.
Playstreets operate, under adult
supervision, five days a week, Monday through Friday, between 8am -
5pm. In 2009 summer playstreets may begin on June 28th or
thereafter, and continue through August 27th. NO PARKING and
NO THROUGH TRAFFIC is permitted on the block during playstreet hours.
These restrictions must have the consent of the residents of the block
for a street to be designated as a summer playstreet.
The playstreet should
serve the entire community, not just a special group. A truly
successful playstreet provides a continuous series of events and
community activities such as sporting events, arts craft shows, and
other recreational activities. (Unfortunately, your Community Board
or Community Assistance Unit cannot provide funding or recreational
equipment).
Who is Eligible to Apply
An authorized
representative of an organized group or block association may apply
for a summer playstreet at the office of the local Community Board.
The group must have two adults who will be responsible for the
on-site supervision and activities on the playstreet.
Standards for Summer Playstreet
To be considered for
summer playstreet designation, a block must:
- Have one-way traffic
only
- Not have commercial
establishments
- Not have a bus route
- Not have a high volume
of traffic
