WHAT KIND of CLINICAL EXPERIENCE WILL I HAVE ?

Optometry Clinic

Located on the second floor of the Engineering Building is the Optometry Clinic. This clinic provides a broad range of vision care services :

Primary Care Service. Comprehensive vision and eye examinations.

Pediatric Vision Service. Children ages 16 years and under, also binocular vision and visual perception disorders.

Cornea and Contact Lens Service. Comprehensive examinations and management of patients using contact lenses of all types, and also special conditions of the cornea.

Ocular Disease and Low Vision Service. Comprehensive examinations, treatment and management of patients with complex eye diseases and disorders, as well as patients requiring vision rehabilitation and low vision devices.

The Optometry Clinic is a major community resource, providing vision care to thousands of patients annually. Since the clinics are available to the public at large, a wide variety of vision problems are seen by each optometry student. Faculty members closely supervise all patient care rendered by students, thus providing quality care to each patient while simultaneously providing extensive learning experiences for each student.

Affiliated Clinics

To implement part of its teaching philosophy, the College of Optometry has developed a rotating internship program for fourth year optometry students to provide broad clinical experience and inter-professional institutional participation.

Department of Ophthalmology - University of the Philippines -Philippinne General Hospital

Final year students go to the UP-PGH Contact Lens Clinic to see patients that need contact lens.

UERM Hospital - Department of Ophthalmology

UERM resident physicians in ophthalmology visit the Optometry Clinic once a week to see patients for pathology.

Community Vision Services

In cooperation with various barangay health centers, the College of Optometry has been going to these health centers for the past few years especially in the month of August, which is the Sight Saving Month.

Aside from the program, the College will also develop a special optometric training and service program of vision screening and appropriate referral services for school-age children. Optometric interns rotate through this program under the supervision of the faculty of the College, who will report directly to the Dean of the College of Optometry.

Externships

During the fourth year, students spend one quarter in private or group practice offices of optometrists or ophthalmologists, in co-management referral centers, and in hospitals (VA, Indian Health, etc.) or other settings conducive to hands-on training in the treatment of ocular diseases.
