Lis Paludan book
"Crochet History and Technique". ISBN #1-883010-09-8 Publisher is Interweave press.
A great companion book to Lis Paludans' book is:
"A Living Mystery the International Art and History of Crochet" not sure it is in print
by Annie Potter

Sylvia Cosh had two books that inspired me.
The first one
"The Crochet Sweater Book" ISBN# 0-517 564785-5 publisher is Crown Publishers. This book is jam packed with lessons on your individule crochet.
Her other book is
"The Crochet Workbook" ISBN#0-312-04032-6 publisher, St. Martin Press. Very freeing.

Maggie Righetti has two great books
"Crocheting in Plain English"  ISBN#0-312-01412-0, publisher St. Martins Press. And "�arn Finders Guide"

"Harmony Guide to Crocheting"
ISBN# 0-517-88074-1, publisher Harmony. Again very inspirational.

"Hook Knitting New Concepts in Crochet"
ISBN#0-87040-710-4 printed in Japan publisher Nihon Vougue.

"Art to Wear" by Julie Schafler Dale. ISBN# 0-896596648 This book is awe-inspiring

Karen Bashford and Pauline Turner's  book "The Appeal of Crochet" ISBN# 1-874080-95-x publisher Print Pulse.

Many of the crochet books I have are more a source of inspiration than pattern books.

You should think of the patterns books as lesson books.

If you choose to make the design  in the book, make it again, using different type of yarn or different color of yarn, maybe a different size hook.

That way you have taken the step to learn more about crocheting and taken the first step away from written directions and a step closer to the creative person inside you.
