Tobacco Review Deacon's Downfall, from Two Friends (G.L. Pease and C&D)

My favorite tobacco blends are those produced by Cornell & Diehl, and Samuel Gawith. Of course within each company's lineup there are losers and winners, the difference being determined primarily by one's personal preference.

Recently I purchased a tin of Gawith's Fire Dance along with a tin Deacon's Downfall by Two Friends. Surprisingly, Fire Dance proved to be an unusually disappointing choice, mainly because the stuff is much too mild. It lacks any definitive character, either good or bad.

Deacon's DownFall, however, is just the opposite. Here's a tobacco that asserts itself with excellent flavor thanks to the presence of both latakia and perique. Additional ingredients include black cavendish, dark stoved Virginias and a tad bit of oriental leaf.

This is a fascinating blend, perhaps due to its relative complexity. While smoking a bowlful I would sometimes experience the spiciness of latakia followed thereafter by the sweetness of cavendish and perique. That alternation was unexpected, interesting, and enjoyable. Furthermore, Deacon's Downfall had almost no bite whatsoever, making it a promising possibility for whoever might wish to try something stronger than an aromatic, but not as strong as a full English.

Highly recommended.
