I will get things done for America - to make our people safer, smarter, and healthier.

I will bring Americans together to strengthen our communities.

Faced with apathy, I will take action.

Faced with conflict, I will seek common ground.

Faced with adversity, I will persevere.

I will carry this commitment with me this year and beyond.

I am an Americorps member, and I will get things done.

"Off the Streets and in the GYM!"

The Schurr Wrestling Alumni Team was started in 1992 when Sheldon Kim and Henry K. Priest got together and organized a summer league wrestling program to provide a positive environment for the Schurr Wrestlers to spend their free time during the long summer days.

Since then SWAT has become active on a year round basis! Sheldon and Henry are Alumns of the Spartan Wrestling Team - Class of 1988. Now there are approximately 20 Alumns that are ACTIVE members of SWAT. You can walk in on any givin day and find AT LEAST 6 or 7 Alumns on the mat running practice.

SWAT members are NOT paid ... they are community oriented individuals who are actively involved in a mentorship to the Schurr Spartan Wrestling Team. Many of the SWAT members wrestle in local colleges and return to share their college technique and experiences with the Schurr Wrestlers.

The majority of the SWAT coaches are CPR and American Red Cross First Aid Certified. We are very proud of our summer league program becuase it helps the student remain focused on their long term goals and by continually working at them ... they become even more realistic. We are proud to announce that the graduating seniors from the class or 1995 to the class of 1998 have had a 100% college enrollment rate! Here is a list of things that we do to assist our wrestlers in being champions on and off the mat:

Training at the Beach:
Every year we take the wrestlers training at Huntington Beach. The guys do wind springs in the in the sand have relay races. They even Sumo Wrestle! They also learn how to surf n'stuff. It's a very memorable day for many of them.

Review Wrestling Videos:
The coaches review past videos and go over techinque with the wrestlers.

Fund Raise Money:
Every year we host four wrestling tournaments and and many SWAT mmbers attend them on their own free time. We also find other means to raise money for the program.

Maintain the  web site:
This web site is designed and maintain by Coach Priest. SWAT members contribute by providing the inspirational literature. They also take pictures and we post them here.

Scholarship Searching:
The Schurr Spartan Wrestlers have had a 100% college enrollment rate from the class of 1995 to 1998. All wrestlers are taught how to search scholarships for college. SWAT members are continually searching for scholarships to fund their higher education. They always help the Spartan Wrestlers allocate any resource that may be there for them.

Daily Lesson Plans:
Walk in on any given day and you will find the SWAT coaches on the mat teaching students how to wrestle, set goals that pertain to wrestling and in their academic life, teach weight lifting technique and other information.

Check Grades:
On top of the nine week progrees reports, SWAT also monitors the students grades. SWAT provides a progress report that is filled out by the student, teachers, coaches and parents. All wrestlers are reqiured to have a personal conference with the head coach in regards to grades.

Tutor:
If there are wrestlers who need help in a specific subject they can ask the SWAT coaches for assistance.

SWAT Study Groups:
On Monday nights SWAT hosts a study group at East Los Angeles College from 6:45pm to 9:00pm. All wrestlers are reqiured to attend one or more sessions. There are also other days made avaliable to them if they ask.

Promotional Video:
SWAT members have made a promotional video that we show to individuals who may be interested in finding more information about or program.

Inspirational Literature:
Our wrestlers are provided with poems and other inspirational literature throughout the season. These poems are provided by SWAT.

Transportation:
During freestyle season the SWAT members attend the local freestyle tournaments. They often provide transportation for our wrestlers.

Host Visiting Teams:
During the summer the Ohio ALL-Stars wrestling team comes to Los Angeles to wrestle the CalStars wrestling team. During this duel match there are over eight states represented. SWAT hosts and promotes this event

Special Field Trips:
Once in a while we travel with the team. Our last big trip was to San Fransisco, CA. Our trip was sponsored by the East Los Angeles Police Activities Team and SWAT.
