Bridge stations in this era conform to what is established in the first Star Trek TV series with two exceptions: COMM/OPS-The operations and communications officer,  is the officer responsible for coordination of the various departmental functions aboard the ship as well as all internal and external communications. They are also in charge of the ship computer system. This combines what Uhura did in the first series with Data’s job in the Next Generation, making the communications officer more than a glorified telephone operator. TACTICAL- The control station and officer responsible for aiming and firing a starship’s weapons. This station also serves as a command post for all shipboard security. The first series never established a security or tactical position on the bridge. The later series have shown this position to be a valuable one.
