1 - Read through the list below to decide if you want to do this alone or with help.
This process may require you to devote much time, learning, and patience to see the effort through to completion. That is why there are specialists who do this for a living.
2 - Create or revise your website to be very usable.
Welcome visitors. If you do not make your site user friendly, first-time visitors will leave and rarely return.
3 - Understand the relationships search engines have with each other.
There are tens of thousands of search engines, but most users will get search results from these major ones. When a search engine indexes a site, it means that they will put the Universal Resource Locator (URL) of that site with other associated data into their database. They share this information with one another.
4 - Be aware that each search engine will require you to follow some rules.
Before you submit your URL a search engine, make sure that your website conforms to these rules.
You create your web pages with embeded meta tags and body copy. Each search engine's indexing computer will check the meta tag data you supply against what it has discovered on its own. If your data does not conform to the rules, your data will be replaced with a different interpretation of your site or not be indexed at all!

5 - Apply SEO techniques to your website.
Below, I have listed some techniques I like along with links to other opinions. If you overdo these within the rules (step 5), figuring it will make your site even more attractive, you are asking for trouble.
6 - Submit your URL to search engines.
Below are links to submit your URL to different search engines. This is by no means a comprehensive list, but it is a good start.
7 - Wait for your effort to pay off.
Rarely, you will see the effects of your improvements within a couple days. It usually takes longer.
Be advised that it may take as long as four to six months for you to reap the benefits.
8 - Determine if you would like to pay to have people visit your site.
The second most cost effective method to drive traffic to you website (after E-mail) is to pay search engines to place your website URL high in their rankings, when returning a search. This is usually referred to as Pay-Per-Click. Know what you are doing or this will cost you.
9 - Keep track of who you are paying and how much.
Do not burn up your money with the automatic payment plans that most seach engines offer. Closely track your search engines and spending long enough to understand what kind of traffic you are paying for at each search engine.
