| The way others see us is sometimes a surprise and always interesting. Normally, when a newborn is handed to the mother for the first time, there are cooing, encouraging words about how beautiful and perfect they are and how glad the mother is that they are finally here. As the doctor handed me to my mother, the first words out of her mouth were "Oh god, he looks exactly like his father. Put him back and let me start over!" Keep in mind she had just spent several months looking like a hippopotamus with a gland problem. Apparently, the thought of more than one of dad was enough to relive it. |
| During the first five minutes of my first trip to a gay club, someone stopped next to me and said "You know who you look like?" The way they left the question hanging, I felt like I was supposed to answer, but knew better than to say Joe Gibbs. Football jokes tend to fall flat in gay bars. "Can I just tell you that you look just like Marky Mark?" I suppose this would have been a compliment under normal circumstances, but I really just wanted to finish peeing. |
