SWAN SONG - a letter from Kevin McSweeney
Hey, everybody,
I have some good news! I have been accepted to I.S.U.'s Ph.D. program in English Studies with a full Graduate Assistantship. That basically means that I will teach two undergraduate composition courses for the English department, and they, in turn, will waive my tuition and give me a monthly stipend.
Now, I have some bad news. I will be leaving the Chicago Park District and The Munroe Park Theater Guild after our production of Jekyll & Hyde. My last official day will be August 2nd. Though this has been a hard decision to make, I feel that the time has come for me to step down and move on.
A few people have said that the theater will not be the same without me. Although I appreciate their sentiment, I must say that the theater has never been me; it has always been you. Your commitment, enthusiasm, talent, and love has created what the Munroe Park Theater Guild is today and what I hope it will continue to be in the future. I have been the person who picked the shows and made the rehearsal schedules; you have been the people who have made the magic and the dreams come true. For that and all of the awesome experiences we have had over the last nine years, I would like to say THANK YOU!! You have taught me so much about myself as a person and as a teacher.
The experiences that we have shared over the last nine years have meant more to me and have had more of an impact on my life than anything I could learn in the classroom. They have molded the person I have become and have given me the confidence to take this last step in becoming a college professor. Please know that you will be missed and that when 7:30 roles around on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays next year, I will be thinking of you -- and part of my will wish that I were there with you (complaining about people being late to rehearsal).
Finally, I would like to invite you to closing night of Jekyll & Hyde on May 18th. I know that this is a busy time of the year for all of you, but it would mean a lot to me to see you in the confines of Ridge one last time. I hope to see everyone there.
With much love and thanks,
Kevin

Featuring: Catherine Negovan, Alan Bukowiecki, Wally Roche & Melanie Aspan. Directed by Kevin McSweeney May 17-19, 2001 at 8 pm Ridge Park Auditorium (second floor), 9625 S. Longwood Dr., Chicago, Ill. It's the 4th of July on Fire Island. A brother and sister, Sam and Chloe
and their respective spouses, Sally and John celebrate the 4th at a beach
house that Sally inherited from her brother who died of AIDS. In this unforgettable
comedy, there is a gnawing uncertainty that makes their affluent habits
and petty prejudices sizzle in the summer sun as they lounge around the
pool. Learn
