sarah last night (aug 28)

last night i saw sarah open for the barenaked ladies on the last stop of that little tour (in winnipeg). t'was amazing. let me tell you.

now we bought tickets about an hour or so before the show started, but they actually weren't brutal seats -- up and to the left of the stage, but close enough. even though the show was at the arena, the sound was incredible. not muddy at all.

sarah and band (which included john, foxy, and marty) opened with 'the hideout', which i really like as an opener. it starts the show off with singing right away. no intro. also it's the single so i think some people kinda recognized it, though it's not getting as much play here as it deserves.

next came 'around this corner'. lovely as usual, but sarah's guitar decided to quit in the middle of it. she seemed sort of amused by it and i think it helped relax things in the crowd. she came in a little late on the 'doo doo doo doo doo...' part and that made us smile

'oleander' was next. sarah has played this every time i have seen her -- is it safe to say it's going on the next album? i love the way this song rocks back and forth.

then, the big one: 'basement apt.' it was during this song that i realized that even though i've seen sarah in much more intimate venues, and i'd never been *that* far away from the stage, she sounded the best i had ever heard her. i don't know why exactly i felt that. everything just seemed perfect and balanced exactly how it should be. or maybe it's that i'm moving in oct. and won't get to see her for a long time, and i'm being dramatic

sarah said: "kevin's going to do lead on this one" and they played '1st lady'. absolutely stunning. that's all i gots to say about that.

'coffee stain' followed. kevin's harmony is still my favourite part of this song.

sarah asked: "are there any weeping tile fans out there?" (i know at least two people who cheered then!) she had the harmonica contraption on, so we knew it was going to be 'good fortune'. i am so glad that this song has survived past wt and is almost always a part of the setlist. as she sometimes does, she changed the lyrics from 'until the night goes by' to 'until the night goes out'.

the highlight of the set for me was 'goin' out'. i have always loved this song. i think they should bring a flutist on tour

there was no time to get weepy after that one, because 'weakened state' was next and it brought things way, way up. i like the 'but i had to have it out' lyric change.

the final song was 'don't get your back up'. sarah brought out ed from bnl to sing backup on the chorus, which was nice. ed was nice enough to share the mic with kevin as well

sarah seemed so happy to be there!

bnl was a lot of fun. they were the first concert i went to when i was small. i had forgotten how talented they are...

their last song was 'brian wilson' and sarah came out and sang the chorus with them. what i wouldn't give for a copy of that!

altogether a wonderful show. i'm going to miss sarah!
