The M-7 consists of an M101, 105mm howitzer mounted on the chassis and lower hull of an M3 medium tank (the General Lee or General Grant) in early models . Later models used M4 Sherman chassis. The "pulpit" to the right of the howitzer featured a 50 Cal machine gun on a circular track for defense. This self-propelled artillery piece was designed to support armored formations.

Armored artillery battalions were not only more mobile, but the fire power that six guns to the battery was 50% greater than 105mm artillery units with towed M101 howitzers.
