A friend from Chicago once described Boston as a big city squeezed into the size of a small town. That's neither a nether a bad nor unfair assessment. Many people who visit are surprised by the diversity of people, neighborhoods, and attractions in such a small city. Some Europeans even remark that it looks like a European city. But that's no surprise given the city's history. As with most cities, the old familiar looks and charm are slowly giving way to a future of skyscrapers and other new projects, both for the good and the sometimes the bland. But, take a look for yourself and decide. While you're there, you may want to send someone a postcard from your virtual trip. And don't forget to visit my old neighborhood, Mission Hill, and my high school, Boston Latin School. |
